Experience – Domaine St. Diego – Maipu, Mendoza, Argentina.

Started in 1988, Domaine St. Diego is the creation of the well-known Argentine winemaker Angel A. Mendoza and his wife Rosalía E. Pereyra. Over the years their three children Juan Manuel, Lucas Nicolás and María Laura have also joined the family micro-enterprise. The winery and its vineyards are planted on the slopes  in the leafy Lunlunta hills in Maipu, a picturesque setting in one of Mendoza’s oldest wine regions.

Angel and Rosalía focus the tour of Domaine St. Diego on their vineyard rather than the winery. This accurately reflects the philosophy of the bodega. Angel Mendoza likes to call himself a wine grower, not a winemaker, as he believes the most important activities happen before the grapes are in the winery. The couple’s daughter, Maria Laura, leads tours of the vineyard to explain maintenance. During the growing season she leads a tasting of malbec grapes to learn how to identify the correct ripeness for harvest. Perhaps the most interesting part of the Domaine St. Diego tour is when visitors see a beautiful old vine called the ‘mother’ vine. In addition to tasting various wines, the tour also includes sampling of Domaine St. Diego’s homemade olive oils.
