Mendoza’s wine region includes more than 144,000 hectares (350,000 acres) of planted vineyards, and produces nearly two-thirds of Argentina’s wine. The country’s most highly rated Malbec wines originate from Mendoza’s high altitude wine regions of Lujan de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. These areas are in the foothills of the Andes mountains, with elevations between 853m (2,800 ft.) and 1525 m (5,000 ft.).
If you are using Mendoza City as a base for independent winery visits, be advised that Maipú is roughly a 30-minute drive away; reaching Luján de Cuyo by car takes close to 45 minutes and Uco Valley can take upwards of an hour. In San Rafael, many wineries can be easily reached by bike. In San Juan, some are within cycling distance, while others are on quiet, pretty roads that are best accessed by car.
Lujan de Cuyo
Lujan de Cuyo is one of the largest and most popular wine regions in Mendoza. Located approximately 21km (13 miles) south of Mendoza city, Lujan de Cuyo is known as the land of Malbec. It’s also considered the place where Argentina’s wine movement began, making Argentine wine production relevant in international markets. Today, Lujan boasts more than 50 bodegas and plenty of luxury resorts and boutique hotels. Below you’ll find a list of our favorite bodegas in the Uco Valley.
