While its remote location can take bewteen 3 to 4 hours to reach, there are several routes and options that travelers can take to access this idyllic paradise. Here are the different ways to embark on your journey to Boipeba:

Getting to Boipeba:

To start, the closest major airport to Biopeba is Salvador’s Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport (Airport Code: SSA). Your journey to Boipeba begins with a flight to Salvador, Bahia’s vibrant capital. Once you are in Salvador, there are several options to get to Boipeba:

By Car + Boat:

The most common and traditional way to reach Boipeba is by taking a combination of taxis and boats. From the Salvador airport, take a taxi or a private car to Terminal Náutico da Bahia (Terminal Turístico Náutico da Bahia), which takes about 20 minutes. Then take a ferry ride from Terminal Náutico da Bahia to Vera Cruz, which takes about 40 minutes. Once you’re in Vera Cruz, take a taxi or a private car to Terminal Hidroviário de Valença, which takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. After arriving at Terminal Hidroviário de Valença take a small boat (lancha) to Boipeba, which takes about 1 hour. You will arrive at the Boipeba port, which is close to Velha Boipeba (Old Town). Upon arrival there are luggage trolleys to help take your luggage to your hotel. The entire journey takes between 3 hours and 30 minutes to 4 hours. 1.  Fly to Salvador’s Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport (Airport Code: SSA)
2. Take a taxi or a private car to Terminal Náutico da Bahia (20 minutes)
3. Take a ferry ride from Terminal Náutico da Bahia to Vera Cruz (40 minutes) 
4. Take a taxi or a private car to Terminal Hidroviário de Valença (1:30 hours)
5. Take a small boat (lancha) to Boipeba port (1 hour)

Keep in mind that you will need to schedule taxis and purchase ferry / boat tickets upon arrival to the ports. There is a local Boipeba guide named John Tour, that will organize all transportation on your behalf (schedule taxis at each stage, buy ferry and boat tickets, etc.). By Plane (Táxi Aéreo) or Helicopter: 

The island of Boipeba has a small airport (runway) located on Fazenda Pontal Boipeba, which is located across from the port of Boipeba. The airport receives both flights and helicopters from Salvador. At the moment there are only chartered flights by Abaeté Aviação. Flights from Salvador to Boipeba take about 30min and cost around R$16.000 for up to 09 people.

The island of Boipeba spans an area of approximately 340 square kilometers (131 square miles). It’s the largest island in the Tinharé Archipelago, which also includes the well-known tourist destination, Morro de São Paulo. Boipeba is one of the lesser known islands in the Tinharé Archipelago, but its off the beaten path vibe makes it one of the best places to relax in all of Brazil.

Velha Boipeba has the most infrastructure on the island as well as the majority of the restaurants and shops. It’s also located closest to the port (marina) of Boipeba, so you’re likely to pass through it upon arrival.

Nestled within Velha Boipeba is Praça Santo Antônio, the town square stands as a cultural hub of the island. The square showcases the island’s rich heritage and vibrant atmosphere. Praça Santo Antônio is more than just a square; it’s a space where local authenticity thrives. Residents gather beneath the shade of trees, sharing stories and laughter. It’s located about a 25 minute 4-wheeler (quadriciclo) ride from the center of Velha Boipeba.

Moreré is famous for its crystal clear natural pools, known locally as Piscinas naturais de Moreré. Its beaches are characterized by their calm and clear waters, especially during low tide, when natural pools form along the shoreline. As the tide recedes, a fascinating underwater world is unveiled, offering glimpses of starfish, octopus, small fish, and captivating coral formations. There is also a floating bar at the Piscinas naturais de Moreré; each day a local rides his boat out to the natural pools to serve caipirinhas with locally sourced fresh fruits such as pineapple, passion fruit, strawberry, mango, caju, lime, and many others. 

Bainema:

Bainema is a more remote and secluded area of Boipeba, located just south of Moreré. Here, you’ll find long stretches of pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, and a peaceful ambiance. Bainema is ideal for travelers seeking solitude and a connection with nature. The area has the least amount of infrastructure on Boipeba, but it’s here you’ll find the quintessential deserted beaches of Bahia. There are two barracas (beach bars) located at the end of Bainema Beach.

Bainema doesn’t have a village, yet the area exudes rustic charm, with small houses and guest lodgings nestled amidst the lush vegetation. Cova da Onça:

The Polvo a Vinagrete is the best appetizer on the entire island. The restaurant’s warm ambiance and very friendly staff enhance the overall dining experience, making it a beloved choice for those seeking a taste of Bahia’s best delicacies in a cozy and inviting setting.

Day Tour on a 4-wheeler (quadriciclo)

A Day Tour on a 4-Wheeler in Boipeba offers an exciting and unique way to explore the lush landscapes of the island. Each 4-wheeler seats up to 2 guests (there will be a local driver). The tour starts at 9:00am in Velha Boipeba and traverses across the island, stopping at remote and secluded beaches and coves that are often inaccessible. The tour visits Praia da Amendoeiras and Praia de Castelhanos before having a late afternoon lunch at Cova da Onça. After a late lunch, visitors can take a short ride to see the Cova da Onça Por do Sol lookout to watch a beautiful sunset. The tour ends around 5:30pm in Velha Boipeba.
